Evi is a voice recognition app that helps you do more with your voice on your device. It's a Siri competitor that supports both Android and iOS. Amazon has apparently bought Evi in an effort to improve the Kindle. The rumor is that Amazon paid $26 million for Evi.
Many people are already speculating that the purchase signals Amazon's desire to make a smartphone. Rumors of an Amazon smartphone have been swirling for awhile and the Evi purchase sends a new signal to some. Amazon could make a smartphone, but why? Their Kindle apps already support the major platforms and I don't see them having much to gain by making a smartphone. They would have to sell a smartphone at such a low margin that it doesn't make sense to me, but Amazon is famous for small margins with little profit to gain marketshare.
Will we see a Kindle phone? Stay tuned.
