This pas week at the Mobile World Congress conference in Barcelona, Google executive Sundar Pichai confirmed that the company was exploring jumping into the cell phone carrier arena. Google appears to be working on a wireless service that would create new technology that leverages WiFi and different carriers in a way that would give you seamless coverage and quality service. Google fans were cheering on the news and the rumors started flying.
For its part, Google said it did not want to be a major carrier, but wanted to jump in just to push innovation that may not otherwise happen. In the same way Google started making Nexus handsets, the idea wasn't to compete but to further innovation.
According to The Wall Street Journal, Google's new wireless service may require you to have a Nexus 6 if you want to take advantage of the service. The restriction would give Google much more control in the early days of building their network, and it makes a lot of sense. Google can easily open the service up as it gets more comfortable with the technology.
If you don't have a Nexus 6, you may now have a new reason to get one if you want to be one of the early adopters of Google's rumored wireless service.
