Motorola opened a factory in Fort Worth, Texas a year ago in an effort to get Moto X phones into customers hands as fast as possible. The theory was assembling the phones in the US would speed up shipping times. When the factory opened things seemed to be running smoothly as they were making about 100,000 Moto X's per week. That number has dropped dramatically, and now Moto has no choice but to close the factory.
"What we found was that the North American market was exceptionally tough," Motorola President Rick Osterloh said in an interview.
Opening a Texas factory was a nice effort for Motorola, but US wage demands are simply too high compared to overseas factories. It looks like all of our devices will be imported from abroad for the foreseeable future.
