Simplicity in mobile gaming is a complex concept. The rule that "simpler is better" is not always right in games, but Terry Cavanagh has created a game that will prove the concept. His game, “Super Hexagon”, is a simple minimalist game that will keep you hanging.
Super Hexagon is a minimal action game with a simple design. Don’t be deceived by its simplicity, it is one of the hardest games out there. The gameplay revolves around navigating through an ever-decreasing set of hexagons as if you are trying to get out of a maze. Some of these hexagons are single-walled while others will only have one gap in them. The space will get smaller as the hexagonal path approach the center. Controls are very simple. You need to control the movement right and left. That will move your pointer around a central hexagon. You can spin around a hexagon to make it through those gaps. The whole level is spinning which means that you constantly need to keep moving.
Sounds easy? You are wrong. This game moves at a furious speed which is accompanied by a retro-punk music and flashing colours. It is a world of never-ending hexagons and your goal is to find a way to escape.
The game is fun and very challenging. It offers varying levels of difficulty. The weird part is that it starts with “hard”. You might not finish some levels but you can skip them and focus on other levels. Each level is very different.
The longest that I’ve survived in this game is 16 seconds. It is very hard but it keeps on drawing me to play it again. You can’t mess around in this game or else you’ll die. There’s no save point in this game which means once you lost, you start from the beginning. You will once again start escaping the mind-bending hexagonal world. The more you play this game, the easier you will recognize some escape patterns.
Bottomline, Super Hexagon is a unique and creative game combined with monstrous difficulty. It is the perfect mixture of hypnotism and addiction. If you don’t want a fast-paced game, then you are just making yourself lost in a world of shapes.
