Android ROM king CyanogenMod now has 1 million active users. That's a huge milestone for the "underground" ROM community. Created by Steve “Cyanogen” Kondik, CyanogenMod offers added features to your Android phone but you have to be willing to basically wipe your phone and add the custom ROM to it. Once you do, a whole world of other apps and utilities are available to you.
One problem with using custom ROMs is there is no central store to get other root apps. CM team member Koushik Dutta has been thinking about creating an app store exclusively for root apps. This would allow users with custom ROMs to have a central place to get rooted apps, much like Cydia provides for iOS. The proposed store would be open-source and available to any custom ROM. We'll see if it happens.
